Accessibility

Built to be read.

Everyone should be able to take part in this campaign and get reliable voting information — whatever their age, vision, mobility or the technology they use. This site uses large type, strong contrast, keyboard and screen-reader support, large tap targets, and voting information you can print.

One reason it matters here: about one in six Rockford residents are 65 or older. If they can't comfortably read the campaign's website, the campaign isn't reaching them.

Nobody has to use a website to take part in this campaign.

Anything here can be done over the phone instead — requesting a mail ballot, volunteering, contributing, signing up to carry a petition sheet, or having the plan read to you. Call 815-669-9604.

Below: what we've done, what still needs testing, and how to tell us if something doesn't work. The measurements behind it all are at the bottom.

What we've done

These are the standards the site is built to. They have not yet been checked by an independent auditor — that audit is listed below, and when it is done its findings go on this page whether or not they are flattering.

  • Large text by default. Body text is 20 pixels — larger than most sites — and it scales further if you increase the text size in your browser or on your phone.
  • Strong contrast. Body text is designed to sit past the stricter WCAG AAA threshold, with the other text colours clearing AA. No light gray on white anywhere. The measured ratios.
  • Large tap targets. Buttons, form fields, navigation links and footer links are built to a minimum 48-pixel target size. Links inside a sentence are the size of the sentence, as they are everywhere on the web.
  • No carousels, no autoplay, no parallax, and nothing built to depend on hovering a mouse. The site is designed to work by tapping.
  • Keyboard and screen reader support. A skip link, a focus outline that stays visible against both the light pages and the dark bands, real headings, form fields whose labels and helper text are both properly attached, and text alternatives throughout.
  • Printing. The voting page and the petition page print cleanly in black and white, in English and in Spanish, with web addresses spelled out and the campaign's phone number on the sheet. Every other page prints too, and all of them carry the paid-for notice — so anything you hand a neighbor is properly attributed.
  • Reduced motion respected, if your device asks for it.
  • Fast on an old phone. No trackers, nothing loaded from anybody else's server. Three typefaces are served from this site, 87 kilobytes together, and the words appear before they finish downloading. If they never arrive, the page still reads. One page uses a script: the property-tax estimator, a single 13-kilobyte file served from this site. Without it, that page shows a worked example instead. No other page uses JavaScript.

Standard

Designed to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA, and to exceed it on text contrast wherever the design allows. Where WCAG 2.2 adds requirements — larger targets, no puzzle-based logins — the site is built to those too. The independent audit below is what turns "designed to" into "verified".

Still to be tested

  • Independent accessibility audit: pending. The date appears below when it's done.
  • Older Android and older iPhone testing: scheduled.
  • Mail-ballot instructions read by a voter 65 or older, unaided: scheduled. The page it tests.
  • Additional Spanish-language pages: in progress. What exists is here.

This page is updated as each is completed.

Technical details

The measurements, for anyone who wants to check them

Measured contrast ratios: body text 14.2:1 against the page and 16.1:1 on a card, both past WCAG AAA. Secondary text 6.1:1. Links 5.0:1. Cream on the navy bands 12.1:1. Every button, form field, navigation link and footer link is at least 48 pixels tall. Body text is 20 pixels and scales with the browser or phone setting. Three typefaces, 87 kilobytes together, served from this site; no third-party scripts or trackers; one first-party script, on the property-tax page, and no page requires it to be read.

Another way in

As above: none of this is required. Call 815-669-9604 and a person will do any of it with you.
